Try this exercise in creative communication. Follow these steps and see how differently the situation resolves itself:
1. Put yourself in the other’s place.
2. Take a deep breath and open your heart.
3. Ask yourself: “Am I being sensitive to how he/she is feeling right now?”
4. Check again: “Is my heart open?”
5. Be aware of what you want or expect from the other. Always ask yourself: “What do I really want to achieve from this conversation and from this person?”
6. Meet the other person where they are at that time. If you speak at a lofty level they cannot reach, there is no hope of clear communication.
7. Speaking softly, gently and honestly, you will develop a silent strength in your language that has the ring of truth.
8. Watch your thoughts, taking care to harbor only kind, loving and truthful mental pictures. People who are in the habit of being manipulative or dishonest have very confused minds. They are always restless, tense and fearful, sending others subtle cues that they are not trustworthy.
9. Be accurate and specific when you speak. To generalize and exaggerate is very harmful to your consciousness because your subconscious mind is not discriminating; it takes everything you say literally.
10. Always speak and think positively about other people. This gives them freedom to change. If you criticize and condemn others, you are reinforcing their weakness. If you find it difficult to speak well of others, it is because you don’t really want to change. If you are willing to grow and to be flexible, you will allow that in others too.
11. Be economical in your speech. Say only what is necessary and avoid wasting energy in unnecessary emotional expressions. When you use your energy to express toxic emotions, it sets up a negative reverberation within you that others can sense.
