This time when he took me, I was ready.

I sat on his stone bed as he came toward me, the perfect form of a man in every way. The strength in his stride, the steely purpose in his eyes and the awe of his power, which swept out to greet me, drew me to my feet. He came close without touching, but he didn’t need to, for our connection had moved beyond the physical. He felt me, like I felt him. And right now our energies melded together.

“You’ve come far since we last met,” he said as he trailed the back of his hand down my face.

“I do not want to fight what is inside of me anymore.”

“You are strong, Rya. I can feel it.” He placed a flat palm over my heart. “But you would never have won.”

The distance from him, when it came, left me bereft. Raclin paced away, the picture of a man in contemplation. “Yet you are still not complete because you are not ready.”

“I don’t understand you.”

“As long as you hold to your human life, there will be a barrier between us.”

“But this is who I am. You’re confusing me.”

“You are no longer human. I have seen to that. But you are not a wraith either, not fully. You hang in limbo, fighting against the truth.”

It felt like he was closing the door on me. The idea of him pushing me away spurned a sudden fury. “I fought twenty men yesterday. All at once. I defeated them in combat. I’ve accepted your gift.” My words were hot enough to burn my mouth had they been more than something you uttered.

My outburst glanced off Raclin’s emotional armor. “Do you think I’m talking about your ability?”

“What are you talking about?” I screamed at him. My riled anger confused me. Why was he affecting me like this?

“Let go of him.”

The shock was more violent than a sword to my stomach. “This has nothing to do with Cerac.”

“There you are wrong.”

“But I don’t understand.”

“This has everything to do with Cerac.” It took him three wide, strong strides to reach me. “The fingers of your heart have wrapped him in the tightest embrace. I cannot free you.”

I shoved him away, but it had little impact.

“You want me to hate him? That is not freeing me. That is making me suffer.”

“You already suffer, Rya. All because of him.”

“No,” I spat. I walked away a few paces but turned back, driven by a desolate rage. “No,” I yelled at him. “My pain is because of me. I have done this to myself.” I swiped at the tears. “I knew what would happen and yet I allowed myself to love him more than anything.”

“And that is why you’re not complete,” Raclin replied, the tone of his voice like a stone wall to my despair.

“To be like you, to be complete, I must denounce love, denounce my heart.”

“I only ask that you stop loving Cerac.”

“I can’t. And I won’t.”

“Even when you must watch him fall in love with another woman?”

“Send me back.
