She removes it with her red fingernails.

Horrified, she looks at it.

“It’s a sock!” someone calls out in surprise.

The journalists nudge each other and point at it. Everyone takes pictures – including me.

“I... I’m sorry!” stammers Emily. “I... I don’t know where that came from.”

The audience roars with laughter.

Bruschetta Cookson’s face turns blood red...

then it turns purple...

and then it turns whiter than a sheet...

and then she keels over and falls flat on the floor.

Passed out.

And that’s how Felix’s sock became a TV star. His stinky sock even made it to the front page of the Sunday paper: Stinky ingredient in soup makes celeb chef choke!

My plan worked perfectly.

Felix wore that sock the week before the competition.

Every single day.

He wore it when practising for cross-country running.

He wore it to school.

He wore it to bed.

He didn’t take it off once.

When he finally took it off the evening before the competition, it was clinging to his foot. The front was glued to his foot with yucky greenish brown toe jam. It stank so badly that I had to put cotton balls in my nose before sealing it in a small plastic bag.

I kept it in my camera bag. And when no one was looking, I took it out and dropped the sock into the bowl of cream on Emily’s table.

Emily couldn’t prove that it was us who had planted the sock in her soup. But she still doesn’t speak to me after the picture I took appeared in the school newspaper. In it she is staring in horror at the sock hanging out of Bruschetta’s mouth. Both their eyes are like saucers. The caption below the picture said, The well-known chef Bruschetta Cook resigned as the judge of Kitchen Princesses after tasting the special sock soup made by a local student, Emily Major.
