You’ve had a few more talks with Hans and feel like you’re getting to know him better. In fact, Hans is climbing right behind you, giving you little pointers here and there.

On a break, he asks, “Do you know why this is called the Western Cwm?”

You laugh. “I don’t even know what a cwm is.”

“It’s pronounced coom, and it’s a Welsh word for valley,” Hans says with the hint of a smile. “This is also sometimes called the Valley of Silence. It has great views! And there’s a great place for a picture just off the route.”

The next thing you know, Hans is unclipping from the fixed rope.
