Part V: Chitchat

Louisa asked me to wait for her in the square outside the Guild, so I was again waiting there, staring at my surroundings.

Juggernaut had been so massive that the Carriers had used teleportation-type skills to move it to a dissection center. There was only one center in District Eight that could handle large monsters. Rikerton’s shop wasn’t able to do it. I felt bad that Melissa wouldn’t have a chance to handle the rare materials, but since all the district’s Dissectors were joining together to help, maybe she’d at least get a chance to help dissect. The massive tree trunk–like bones made high-quality building material, the nails and other parts were apparently used as material to make glass, and many of the other parts had uses.

We’d taken the Fanged Orcs’ teeth as Elitia suggested, but apparently, someone with dissecting skills would have been better able to preserve their value when removing them than we were. Well, there’s no point sweating the small stuff if you don’t have the skills to deal with it. The only choice we had was to take the valuable parts back with us.

It was quite normal for other Seekers to take the materials we threw away, like the Cotton Ball bodies. There were a lot of things in the labyrinth that couldn’t be carried back and so were just left. The general rule was that if something was left for an hour, then any possession rights were gone and it was free game. Anyone who took it wouldn’t gain any karma.

“Sorry to keep you waiting, Mr. Atobe,” said Louisa.

“Oh… You’ve changed out of your work uniform.”

“Yes, we stand out quite a bit if we walk around in our uniforms… I can’t really say this too loudly, but the registrar ladies tend to get catcalled, so we’ve been asked by the higher-ups to dress more plainly in public.”

She had now let down her hair, which changed her image quite a lot. She was wearing sort of relaxed but mature clothing that I suppose you could call plain, but the material the clothes were made from was soft and really showed off her curves.

It’s the same with those knit sweaters; it emphasizes certain parts, and my eyes just… It’s probably a traditional design for this world, but why is there always a low neckline…?

“…? Is something the matter, Mr. Atobe?”

I thought she was going to say that my karma would go up, but she didn’t. She had said it was based on your relationship with the person, so maybe we’d gotten to a point where I could look all I wanted… If I was wrong, though, I’d be in trouble, so it was safer to assume it was still taboo.

“I was just surprised; you look so different now. I was thinking it’s amazing how different women look when they’re on duty and off.”

“Ha-ha… It’s always the stoic-looking ones who change the most. I’m not too different when I drink, but I do enjoy it, so I might get a little chatty.
