Drugs at the Olympics

Some athletes have tried to cheat at the Olympics by taking drugs to improve their performance. This is against the rules. Drugs affect many sports, but have been an especially big issue in athletics. Two Olympic 100-meter gold medallists have had their medals taken away after admitting to drug use.

From Athens to Athens—the Olympics in Europe

From Athens in 1896 to London in 2012, more than half of the Summer Olympic Games have been held in Europe. In 2004, the Games returned to Athens, where they had started in 1896.

European Olympics have seen great sporting achievements. Dutch athlete Fanny Blankers-Koen won four gold medals in London in 1948. Czech runner Emil Zatopek earned an amazing three golds, winning the 5,000 meters, 10,000 meters, and the marathon at the Helsinki Games in 1952. His wife, the athlete Dana Zatopkova, won a gold medal in the javelin, too.
