Chapter 5

The Wake-Up

I know that everyone that comes into the correctional system as a rookie employee is laughed at for their naivete. In fact, the inmates will run game on you so long as you appear vulnerable. The game actually never stops. It’s just that one finally gets a handle on what’s happening and figures out what’s going on. In the words of my preacher brother, “There is a lot of difference between knowing what’s happening and what’s going on.” I knew what was happening in the correctional institutions before I started to work in them. The state was locking bad people up and protecting the public from the undesirable elements of our society. That was what was happening. I didn’t find out what was going on until I started spending eight to ten hours a day inside the prison. What’s going on is what this book is all about. In spite of all the violence and corruption that permeates the correctional system, a lot of positive things are going on. Lives are changed, not all, but enough to justify the public outlay of dollars in support of educational and drug rehab programs that are currently being funded. We need much more for what I call the throwaway children in our society.

I reported for work on Monday morning bright eyed and bushy tailed ready for this new world. I considered myself the quintessential correctional educator for after all while working on my doctorate, I had taught three years for Bacone College at the McLeod Correctional Center for men in Southeastern Oklahoma. In the words of cartoon characters, not! I was totally unprepared for the verbal and manipulative onslaught that I had to endure for the first few days of my assignment. These ladies were jumping up and down like show dogs in a carnival. Give them an audience, and they would really put on a show for you. On this particular day, they had an audience of three staff, and twenty inmates. It was definitely the time to show out and get their reputation buildup early.

The ladies were at full volume. It sounded like a gaggle of geese going after one another. I zipped across the hall just in time to see Vanessa and Dallas about to get it on. I told them to get back to their seats and maintain. If looks killed, I would have expired on the spot. Vanessa gave me one of the most withering looks I’d ever encountered, and Dallas just turned and went back to her desk muttering under her breath regarding either some part of my anatomy or hers. I ignored her as if I didn’t hear and left the room. The rest of the testing day went pretty much as planned and surprisingly without further disruptions. However, when the tests were finished, Vanessa and Dallas walked off down the hall expressing to each their contempt for the other. Both were marking their territory.
