Einar finished his walk forty minutes later. I waited a few moments, then went inside and walked downstairs to reception. Lars’ eyes were narrow and his face puffy, but he smiled widely when he saw me.

“Agnes! God morgon.”

“Hej, Lars.”

“We missed you last night.”

The previous evening I had gone to my cabin directly after dinner. Lars called me about a half hour later to invite me to a party in his cabin with the other Swedes. I was deep into creeping Einar and didn’t want to stop, so I said no.

“It was really fun,” Lars said. “We talked about Swedish politics and drank way too much beer. I called my wife on Skype so everyone could meet her and the baby.”

My heart panged at the thought of the little group of Swedes huddled together in Lars’ cabin. “I’m sorry I missed it.”

“I’m sure we’ll do it again another night.”

“I hope so. Any luck with the whale tour?”

Lars shook his head. “I’m so sorry. But you never know, someone might change their mind at the last minute. I’ll page you right away if that happens.”

“All right,” I said, my lips trembling.

“The other tours have openings in case you’re interested. There’s a hike, and there’s also ice fishing.”

I winced. “A little too sporty for me.”

“There’s lots of fun things to see in Tromsø. Even when it’s dark.”

“Is the sun coming up at all today?”

Lars checked a clipboard by his computer. “It comes up at 11:01 a.m. and sets at 12:05 p.m. But don’t worry, all the streets are well lit.” He handed me a map from a stack on the counter. “This is the city center. There’s a list on the side of all the sights, as well as restaurants and cafés. Tromsø has been the jumping-off point for lots of Arctic expeditions, it’s a fascinating place.”

“Thanks,” I said. “I’ll look at this during breakfast.”

“Let me know if I can do anything else. We want our passengers to be happy.” He winked. “Especially the Swedish ones.”

What a friendly young man. As I walked through the lobby to the dining room, I thought about Liv. Wouldn’t it be nice if she met a Swede and settled down in Stockholm? Maybe during her Easter visit we could have fika with Lars. He was married, of course, but he was bound to have friends. Liv was so pretty and smart, who wouldn’t fall in love with her?

Everyone was at table 48 except Pamela. She kept saying how she liked to sleep in, but the truth was that Pamela was too lazy to get up at a normal time. Just another one of her lies.

Maj and Per greeted me warmly. Einar inclined his head slightly, and Sandy fluttered her pink-nailed fingers.

“God morgon,” Maj said. “We missed you at the party last night, Agnes.”

“Party?” Sandy said. “Did someone say party?”

Maj laughed. “Nothing so very wild. Just a group of Swedes drinking beer. But we did talk to Lars’ wife and baby on Skype. It was fun.” Maj gave me a knowing look.
