Mayflower

Someone said Nez Perce country reminds her of Tuscany

or Umbria and today on my drive through these yellow hills

I might just agree except for the Mayflower truck

straining its sails against the impossibly steep grade

banked by the metal figures of Sacajawea and good old

Lewis and Clark. Last month coming off this same grade

I was pulled over for speeding and when the cop asked

where was I going I regret not telling him

to the rez to pick up drugs

even though that’s exactly what I was doing.

I’ve been reading articles by an Indian writer

who is accused by another Indian writer

of not comprehending irony. My drives to the Lapwai

clinic for my monthly pickup give me time

to think about these things. I’ve always thought

irony is instilled by birthright when you’re Indian

and if it’s missing something might be seriously wrong

with you. These same hills remind me of the wooly

backs of animals—horses I guess like the Appaloosas

the Nez Perce are stewarding. Today I have a different

kind of Appaloosa that’s slow to the grade

and I must have climbed up this hill about a thousand times

in every direction.
