Chapter Fourteen

SEVERAL PEOPLE clomped into their house, and all George could think of was that Billy was going to have a fit when he discovered the dirt trails their visitors’ boots left.

The last person to enter his home was an elderly woman. George blinked when he took in the sight of her: her face was wrinkled and clearly spoke of old age, but her light-gray eyes were lucid and alert. She smelled like a combination of strong eucalyptus drops and a variety of herbs.

George gasped. “Amelia.”

Amelia, the witch. She acknowledged his gasp with a curt nod of her head before she closed the door behind her.

She walked up to George with an intent expression on her face, and then she lifted her hands and cupped them around his shirt pocket. George stumbled backward, cursing.

Billy? Are you okay?

I think so. I felt hot a moment ago.

Stay where you are.

Wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else. What’s going on?

I’m not sure, but I’ll find out.

“He is your true mate,” Amelia stated in her melodious voice that still carried a heavy French accent.

“Of course he is. Was there any doubt?” George snarled. He wasn’t sure he liked where this conversation was heading.

“We needed to be sure, child. Your father was betrayed, and no one ever thought of checking if Isabelle was his true mate. We assumed your father knew the difference, but we were wrong.” The smile slipped from her face before she pointed over at the sofa, where someone laid down the pregnant woman. “Now, we not only have to deal with his death and you, child, who doesn’t want to step up and take the position he was born into. No, we have to deal with her bad choice as well.”

She’s quite the nagging bitch, isn’t she? Billy piped up. Who is she?

Her name is Amelia. She’s a witch.

A witch? Oh, I remember your father talking about her. Um, I think I’ll stay here. It’s really incredible comfy. I should have tried this place out earlier. I—

It’s okay, Billy.

Amelia moved her finger until it hovered in the air, only inches away from George’s shirt pocket. George lifted his hand and rested it above the pocket, shielding Billy.

“We will need your mate in his human-form.”

What? What for? Billy shrieked.

Billy’s little body trembled underneath his palm. He pushed his thumb into the pocket to rub Billy’s head for a short moment while he repeated Billy’s question. “What for?”

“Isabelle will give birth soon. Your mate is a trained nurse. He can attend to her needs while you sign the papers to adopt the baby.”

There was a moment of shocked silence, so heavy it seemed as if the air thickened and made it hard to breathe. George’s legs began to tremble as he shook his head to clear it. This had to be a nightmare.

George! What is she talking about? Billy’s voice had reached the ear-piercing state. He pushed George’s thumb off his head and peeked over the pocket’s hem.

“Excuse me?” George croaked out.

“Isabelle is giving birth to your father’s daughter, your sister.
