CHAPTER TWENTY
All for One
The trail to Beccaâs house zigzagged up the steepest part of the Heights, ending at the foot of a two-story colonial not far from her street. At the top, Robby stopped to catch his breath while Zeus lumbered slowly around the final switchback, huffing in the cold. Though it was only late afternoon, the moon glowed pale and low in the sky.
Victorian-style lampposts lined both sides of the street, while wreaths dotted with red bows and dusted with fresh snow hung from most of the doors. Beccaâs was not one of them. A menorah flickered in the living room window instead.
Robby knocked on Beccaâs front door, shifting nervously while he waited for someone to answer. Zeus flashed Robby a reassuring smile as he huddled beside him, his hands shoved into his pockets. They were both puzzled that Becca had asked them to come over as soon as sheâd returned from visiting her father.
As Becca opened the door, a gust of warm air swept over Robbyâor maybe it was just the blood rushing to his cheeks.
âZeus, you can leave your jacket and shoes over there,â she said, pointing to a coat rack by the door. âI need a second alone with Robby.â
Zeus caught Robbyâs eye. âGood luck,â he mouthed.
Robby followed Becca around a corner to the foot of the stairs, catching a glimpse of her mother poking at a fire in the living room. Spotting them, she waved and then turned back to the fireplace.
âBeccaââ he began.
âShush.â
âIâm sorry Iââ
She shushed him again, then stood on her tiptoes and gave him a peck on the forehead. âHappy Hanukkah.â
âIs this some kind of Jewish tradition I donât know about?â Robby asked, feeling more confused than ever.
Beccaâs mother laughed. âI think she just missed you. Becca, leave your door open if you go upstairs.â
Robby shook his head. âThen⦠youâre not breaking up with me?â
Becca poked him hard in the shoulder. âIt would serve you right if I did, all that sneaking around. But no.â She studied him thoughtfully. âWe need to talk about Miss Winters.â
