THE NAVAJO BEAUTY PRAYER
Through an eloquence that’s typical of such ancient wisdom, Navajo tradition describes a way of looking at life’s extremes that places the responsibility for our happiness, as well as our suffering, squarely upon our shoulders. Wisdom Code 12 reflects this perspective and is known as the Beauty Prayer. This powerful code forms the closing prayer of the Blessing Way ceremony, one of a series of six ceremonies intended to bring harmony to the cosmos and all things in it. Other ceremonies in the series include the Holy Ways, the Life Ways, the Evil Ways, the War Ceremonials, and the Game Ways. Although the precise language of Wisdom Code 12 varies from transcription to transcription, and from telling to telling as it is handed down from generation to generation, the theme of the prayer remains unchanged.
To offer the essence of this code as simply and respectfully as possible, I’m sharing an informal daily-use version that was described by the Navajo artist and painter Shonto Begay in a magazine article I read many years ago. Begay offers the code in three brief phrases, with each phrase illuminating a key insight into our power to shift the chemistry of the body and influence the way we see our world. I also offer a longer, more formal version of the prayer in the text that immediately follows this description.
Begay describes the essence of the Navajo beauty prayer, stating “We say nizhonigoo bil iina, the beauty that you live with, the beauty that you live by, the beauty upon which you base your life.” Through these words, for centuries Navajo elders have conveyed a sophisticated wisdom, reminding their people, and now us, of the connection between our inner and outer worlds—a connection that has been recognized only recently by modern science. Each phrase of this prayer describes one facet of our relationship with beauty, and what the embrace of beauty can mean to our lives. The key here is that we must invite the power of beauty into our lives. A closer look at this wisdom code, phrase by phrase, reveals the subtle nuances of the prayer and why it holds so much power.
