Most of the group had moved from the Tabernacle back to the singularly open hotel just west of the campus. Ryan had detoured to his small apartment amidst the caverns of empty housing a few blocks south. He had some information he wanted to share with his father concerning his idea for a communications system.

An hour later in the hotel lobby, when Ryan had not returned immediately, Jimmy began to get concerned and caught his father’s eye. Robert knew the meaning of the look immediately and excused himself from the conversation with the Militia Colonel.

When the older Moyer joined the captains, Marsha also realized that something was wrong. They were just about to set out the door when it opened and a disheveled figure stumbled in.

Constance Breckinridge did a double take when her stepson walked in the door. She noticed immediately that something was wrong with him. Gary wore a blank expression on his face, scanning the room for his father. Snow had frozen to his hair and coated the surface of his dark blue suit coat. “Hyrum...” she touched her husband’s arm.

Very slowly, almost reverently, he passed the Moyers, advancing on his parents.

“Gary, what did you do?”

In answer he extended his right hand, clenched in a fist toward them. “I have this for you.”

The blue ribbon and shiny medal clearly showed the dark stains of blood as it fell from his hand to the floor.
