Using Your Rate of Fire as a Tactic

Just in case you thought rate of fire was a technique only for single-string matches, here’s what target rifle shooter Des Burke had to say: “Timing also becomes an important tactic. The marksman should learn to fire rapidly . . . It pays sometimes to ignore the demands of . . . clerical records and to concentrate on speed . . .”27

The British are now training all their team shooters to release the shot within five seconds of the “go on” command, and many of them do it within two or three seconds. It is just as important for an individual competitor to be able to release a good shot fast. Even when you shoot alternately, being able to release the shot quickly will improve your rhythm (an important factor in firing perfect shots) and allow you to stay in step with the wind (an important factor in catching your wind condition). The shorter you make the overall match (by firing quickly), the better the odds that you will get to fire as many shots in one condition as possible. Even if you must fire in several conditions, you are more likely to finish the match while the overall pattern you identified is still present.
