That night I had a terrible nightmare. I was in the woods looking for my flip phone. I heard something behind me in the trees and I knew it was the monster. I ran.

I looked back and saw something with huge, sharp teeth and a hairy body crashing through the trees and branches chasing me. I got to the house, but it followed me in and I hid in my closet while it ate my parents. Then it came into my room and stood by the closet door, breathing...

I woke up in a sweat, tangled in my sleeping bag. I scooted out and sat there for a minute on the pad in my room. Light streamed in through the window.

What time was it?

I checked my phone.

It was almost eight-thirty. School started in five minutes!

I jumped up and pulled on some clothes. Did I forget to turn on the alarm? Why hadn’t Dad woken me up?

I ran into the kitchen and saw the milk sitting out on the counter along with a half-eaten bowl of cereal.

“Hello?” I called. “Dad?”

No answer.

I looked out the back window toward the woods.

Dad was outside, carrying the now-empty trash bin back onto the porch. He set it down, then saw me through the window. He looked at his watch. I saw him grimace.

He slid the door open.

“I completely forgot, Scott!” said Dad. “You are totally late now, aren’t you?”

I nodded as I pulled out a clean bowl from the cupboard. I poured myself some cereal, and scarfed it down.

“Well, Mom has the car, so I can’t take you,” he said. “You’ll have to walk.”

I nodded again as I started slurping my milk from the bowl.

“You want me to walk with you?”

I almost choked on the milk.

“Uh, no thanks Dad,” I said, wiping some milk from my chin before it dribbled down my neck. “I’ll be fine on my own.”

He smiled big under his beard, and I knew he thought he was being really funny.

I made sure I had my homework in my backpack, flung it on, and headed out the sliding back door. The sky was kind of cloudy still, but the sun was shining through in parts. It didn’t look like it would rain. I walked across the still damp grass, toward the Shaggy Creek Woods. I pulled out my phone to check the time again: 8:46am.

So very late to school.

I paused at the edge of the yard. The woods looked as gloomy as ever. I remembered my dream, but tried to think about something else.

I didn’t have a choice.

I took a deep breath and stepped into the woods. It was going to be the worst decision I had ever made.
