Liz glared at me. “This is your genius plan? Are you frakking kidding me?” she asked with a hint of vehemence.

I didn’t expect that reaction at all. “It is a good plan.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Extreme situations require extreme measures.”

We were sitting around the conference table in the Command Center. I’d called Tarq, Maada, and the rest of the gang to an urgent meeting.

She raised her voice. “You remember what just happened on Niovis, right? Millions will die!”

“Not necessarily,” offered Tarq, who’d decided to come to the meeting wearing red sweatpants and shirt, thick black gloves, a shiny black belt, and a flashy red-sequined cape. “We asked the Zharnuuties to attack and destroy the enemy bases, and because we did not set any limits, they did it with no care for their own safety. This time around, we can make it clear to the humans that they are meant to be a diversion and they should not waste their lives.”

Liz balled her hands into fists. “It will do us a whole lotta good when the Xenoakakie fleet starts bombarding Earth!”

“Which will not happen, if we pull this off,” said Maada. “And I must add our success rate in carrying out Jim’s insane plans is pretty good.”

“I must say, I’m surprised you agreed with my plan so willingly, with no argument at all,” I told Maada.

He shrugged. “Your craziness must have been rubbing off on me.”

That exchange somehow made Liz more furious, and I could see she was struggling to keep her cool. “What gives you people the right to sit here and decide the fate of God knows how many people who will certainly get killed?”

“Liz, you haven’t been with us very long.” I rubbed my forehead. “We decided to make decisions on behalf of humanity a long time ago, and we’ve done pretty well, I must say. One could argue there wouldn’t be any humanity left if we hadn’t done that.”

She gave me a hard look. “I really want to know how you do this.”

“Do what?”

“You make decisions that impact millions of lives, sometimes with disastrous results, causing untold deaths, and yet you don’t seem to be conflicted about it at all.”

Well, I was, actually, but just a little bit, and it wasn’t like I was going to show her weakness. “I am not. It’s simple: bad guys come, and people need protecting. I protect them. There’s a reason there are millions of golden statues of me all around the galaxy, you know.”

“My Jim wasn’t like that,” she said with a sad look in her eyes. “He was sort of self-centered, to be honest.”

I chuckled. “So was I. All I wanted to do was fly and blow up shit. Things started to change when Tarq appointed me as the commander of the fleet. I started feeling responsible for the people under my command, and that extended to their families and loved ones, and later, somehow the entire human race. And that was before I became the chancellor of the galaxy.
