Chapter5

George pulled into the farmhouse drive and brought the car around back next to the barn. They got out and covered it back up with the worn out tarp, effectively hiding the fact that someone was living on the abandoned property. They spoke very little until they were all back inside the barn again.

“So how do we find him?” asked George. It was obvious who he was referring to.

“From what they said on the radio, it sounds like he’s still in the area. I imagine he’ll want to stick around and feed until he regains his full strength. Once that happens, he’ll have access to his full powers again, and he’ll be impossible to track down.”

“We need more details about those two people he killed,” I said. “If we can establish a pattern then maybe we can get to him before he kills again.”

“We’ll have to go back into town then,” said George. “If we can get to a phone then maybe Jen can do the talking and pose as a reporter asking about the victims. Once we have a bit more information, we can figure out where Trevor is hiding.”

“It’s probably best if we rest up during the day and go back into town later this afternoon,” offered Ben. “Trevor will be moving mainly at night, so our best bet is to be on the lookout for him while he’s hunting. If we can get access to a police scanner later, then maybe we can catch news of him in action.”

“You mean we wait until he kills someone else?” The idea of it shocked me, but I couldn’t think of any other way to track him down either.

“I know it’s morbid,” said Ben, “but until we think of another way to find him, it’s pretty much the only way we’ll be able to get a bead on his location. A vampire like Trevor King will have a daytime hiding place that will be impossible for us to find.”

“It’s the best plan we’ve got right now,” said George. “Why don’t you two rest up while I go find Ben and I something to eat?”

“That’s probably a good idea,” I said. “I know I slept several hours last night, but I feel like I haven’t slept in days.”

George slipped out of the barn and Ben and I were left alone in the quiet stillness of the large wooden building. Shafts of sunlight sliced through the air, illuminating swirling patterns of dust and hay particles. The sweet smell of the aging bales all around us was rather pleasant, and I realized that the farm must not have been abandoned all that long considering the hay wasn’t all that rotten.

“Ben, this place… you didn’t do anything to the owners, did you?”

“What? No of course not. Why would you ask that?”

“It just seems like someone was storing hay in this barn not too long ago. The property doesn’t seem like it could have been abandoned all that long.”

“Oh, that.” Ben still looked taken aback at my question.
