Unified Nostril Breathing

Sit in a comfortable position. Breathe in through the nose for eight counts. Hold the breath for eight counts. Breathe slowly out through the nose for eight counts. Hold the breath for eight counts. This is one cycle of Pranayama. Start with around twenty cycles, working up to sixty cycles or more. Focus solely on the breath. The mind will tend to wander; gently guide it back to an awareness of the breath. If inhaling or exhaling for eight counts is too difficult, start with a count of four and try to increase to eight-count cycles. One can extend this further: to ten-, twelve-, or even sixteen-count cycles. This exercise is very calming. It is also an excellent method to use with a group, especially prior to ritual.
