‘Clara Reid,’ the prison warden bellows, heaving open a thick metal door leading to a tiny office.

A man sitting behind a grey melamine desk looks up at me, glasses tilted on his nose.

‘Welcome Clara. Please—have a seat,’ he says smiling.

I sit opposite. ‘Thanks. Nice to meet you Mr Cox,’ I reply as butterflies jostle for position in my stomach.

‘Anthony. Call me Anthony,’ he says, offering his hand.

I shake it, hoping he can’t feel mine trembling.

‘So, Clara, how are you feeling about your placement?’

‘A bit nervous,’ I admit, ‘but I’m looking forward to it.’

‘You’ve been highly recommended by your university supervisor. I hope you know what you’ve let yourself in for.’ He tosses me a grin, raising bushy brows. ‘We’ll start with the two-hour group session. You’ll be observing at first, taking notes about the inmates in the program. We’ll debrief afterwards.’

‘Okay,’ I reply, feigning a confident smile.

‘We start in half-an-hour, so let’s grab a coffee and I’ll show you around.’

The butterflies start performing backflips.
