âYouâre not drunk.â
Heâd never been accused of such a thing before. As Graeme opened the door to their bedchamber, he tried to gauge Gillianâs mood.
A change had come over his wife upon learning theyâd be leaving for Lyndwood tomorrow. Though heâd never describe her as carefreeâshe was much too thoughtful for such a designationâshe smiled more easily than before. The news had pleased her.
âYou say that as if youâre disappointed.â
Gillian sat on the bed, out of his reach.
But not for long.
âWhen I first joined you, I thoughtââ
He began to walk toward her. The soft glow of candlelight put him in mind of her gown on May Day, the one sheâd also worn to their wedding. She looked radiant, ethereal, as if she was not from this world.
âI am very careful,â he said. âUnlike my brother.â
She smiled. âI do see what you mean. But I like him.â
âAs do I.â He returned her smile, taking another step forward. âWhy did you think I was in my cups, my fair English queen?â
He stood next to her now. And waited.
âYou appeared more relaxed than normal. Which I thought was odd given the circumstances.â
He raised his brows. âAnd which circumstances would those be?â
Graeme would not touch her. Not until she requested it. Even though he wanted nothing more than to slip her gown off and continue to explore everyâ
âWas that a knock?â he asked, certain heâd heard a sound coming from the wardrobe room.
âOh, aye. I nearly forgot to tell youââ
But he had already crossed the room and was pulling the door open.
âOh!â A young maidservant he didnât recognize stumbled into the chamber.
âWho are you?â he demanded. Gillian pulled on his arm, jolting his attention to her.
âI was just trying to tell you. This is Morgan. She arrived from Lyndwood after you left, andââ
âAh, yes.â He remembered being told her men had arrived with Gillianâs belongings and her ladyâs maid. They had apparently stayed the night and returned to Lyndwood in the morning. A pity, heâd have liked to speak to them ahead of his own visit there.
âI thought I heard your voice, my lady. My apologies forââ
ââTis nothing, Morgan. You mayââ
âReturn to the ladyâs chamber,â Graeme finished.
Morgan looked from him to her lady. âBut surely you need my assistance?â
âShe does not,â Graeme said firmly. If he could not remove his own wifeâs clothing, then he was a poor husband indeed.
Gillian made a face at him and then gave her attention to the maid. âYou may return to the ladyâs chamber. It appears your assistance is not needed tonight. But thank you, Morgan.â
The maid bobbed a courtesy, muttered, âMy lord,â and left.
Gillian crossed her arms over her chest, which only brought more attention to her ample breasts. âYou scared her.â
âScared? Iâve done no such thing.â
She did not appear convinced.
âI simply informed herââ
âIn a tone well-suited to a battlefield. As you towered above the poor woman.â
âTowered? Would you have me kneel before her?â
To illustrate, he lowered himself to one knee.
âHappily met, Mistress Morgan,â he said, looking up at his wife as if she were the maid.
