Sweet Memories and Scalding Truths

Cooper’s pulling so hard I feel like my arm will rip out of its socket. But I don’t tell him to stop, because there are men with guns behind us. They’re shouting and angry, and Cooper disarmed that guy like he was a freaking action hero. When the hell did he learn to do that?

My sandals slip as we jump off the path and along the dirt track, leading to some kind of side gate that only staff must know about. The gold straps dig into my flesh, biting and hurting, but I don’t have time to stop and take them off.

A bullet pings off the palm tree next to me. I scream and duck my head. Cooper pulls a little harder and I cry out, unable to hide my pain.

“Are you hit?” He whips around, fear stark on his face.

I shake my head. I can’t speak. I’m being chased by a man with a gun. A bullet just missed my head. My friends are being held hostage by these psychopaths.

Holy shit! Holy shit!

Cooper urges me forward, his silent, sure way settling my nerves a little. Okay, a very little. I am freaking out!

We reach the gate, Cooper slamming his shoulder into it as soon as the bolt is pulled free. Rushing down the narrow trail, we plunge into the jungle, and all I can hope is that he knows where he’s going, that we can find a good place to hide until these guys give up and we can safely sneak back into the resort so I can free my friends.

Because I’m not leaving them.

I don’t care what kind of argument Cooper’s gonna make. I can’t just look out for number one. They’re my friends. I won’t cut and run! How can I possibly abandon them when they might be getting their kneecaps smashed in?

Another spray of bullets scatters the ground at my feet.

I pick up my pace, ignoring the pain between my toes as these stupid sandals argue with this physical activity.

What the hell are you doing running? You never run, let alone sprint like some maniac! Calm the hell down and walk like you normally do!

I push on, adrenaline and instinct driving me forward.

I can’t die.

No one will be able to help my friends if I bleed out on some hidden pathway on the back of this island.

Cooper let my hand go as soon as we left the resort, and as much as I miss holding it, it’s way easier to run. I pump my arms and try to keep pace with him, slapping big palm leaves and bright green foliage out of my way when he veers off the path.

We’re running in dense jungle now—untamed island wilderness. It’s a little off-putting, although Cooper seems to know what he’s doing. I’ve always kind of loved that about him, trusted him blindly. Should I still be doing that?

Should I—

A surprised yelp punches out of me as Cooper grabs my wrist and flings us both off the edge of a small cliff.
