Another threat to a Navy surface ship is that of the submarine, designed to operate quietly and stealthily. In addition to those physical advantages, the submarine has an ally in the ocean itself—not just the ocean’s depth but its temperature. As the ocean gets deeper, temperature drops; a rapid temperature drop over a short depth change is called a thermal layer. A surface ship will bounce sound waves (sonar) off the submarine to locate it. However, if the sound waves hit a thermal layer, they bounce back. Since the surface ship’s sonar can’t penetrate the thermal layer, the submarine continues to operate undetected.
