FLYING FLUIDS. You know you need to hydrate while flying. The dry cabin air and the distraction of travel can leave you parched. And dehydration can make you feel foggy and less able to make smart food choices. It’s also healthy to drink sufficient fluids, as a good fluid intake insures frequent strolls to the bathroom to stretch your legs. The best basic fluid choice is, of course, water. Pick up a bottle in the terminal (after clearing security) if you can so you can sip from the moment you’re in your seat. Sometimes it takes a while before you’re offered a drink, if you’re offered anything at all, on the flight. If you like, take along some Crystal Light packets (many newsstands sell them right next to the water) to add flavor to your bottled water. If you have a choice of beverages on your flight, choose water, tea, seltzer, or a juice spritzer (seltzer with a splash of fruit juice). Avoid alcohol entirely while flying. It can promote dehydration and can also be the first step in undoing all your good intentions. Also avoid a Virgin Mary. Many clients told me that they thought this was a good beverage choice, but it’s far too high in sodium (a 12-ounce Mr. & Mrs. T Bloody Mary Mix has 2100 mg of sodium!) and can promote dehydration and also make those high-cal, salty, airline snacks even more appealing.
