CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

After the takedown of the two guards, Alexandru received a linked call from the radio sentry. “Go,” he whispered.

“Team Four to the west has been dispatched.” The voice, as always, sounded flat and unemotional.

“You want to repeat that.”

“Team Four to the west has been dispatched.”

“I know what you said.”

“I’m just following your orders to repeat—”

“Quiet.” Alexandru was hunkered low in the thicket with his associate, an elite hands-on fighter. His mind was racing in an attempt to grasp the reality that two of his own had been terminated. And then: “Do we have any knowledge of the hostiles?”

“Stand by.”

While waiting for the radio sentry, the associate shrugged as if to say ‘what?’

In a whisper so low that it appeared as though he was mouthing his words, Alexandru said, “We lost the westside unit.” And then he made a cutting motion across his throat.

Over his earbud, he finally heard: “Sir?”

“Go.”

“I’m linking you to the Prime Chancellor.”

More clicks.

Then: “Alexandru?”

“Yeah, Nicolae.”

“We’ve lost the westside unit.”

“So, I’ve been told.”

“Then, you’re not going to like what I’m about to tell you.”

“More good news?”

“Hardly. It appears that they were removed from the equation by the Vatican Knights.”

Alexandru didn’t move or show emotion. It was as though he was entirely numb.

“Alexandru?”

“Yeah. I read you,” he finally said.

“Vatican Knights never travel alone. Find them before they find you.”

“Copy that.”

After the disconnect, Alexandru contacted all teams involved in the hunt. The game had just been ratcheted up; he told them. Now, it was time to prove to themselves that they were the better force: the Vatican Knights or the Vladorian Guards.

He was about to get his answer.
