It is easy to plug in lots of different equipment to your computer or laptop in order to enhance your set-up for the hearing, but have you checked your computer’s specification to make sure it can cope with this?

You do not want your computer to overheat in the middle of the hearing because it is trying to do too much and crashing, or potentially worse.

If your computer cannot cope with significant demands being placed upon it, consider what needs to be sacrificed. Consider using paper bundles rather than electronic documents (tip 23) or handwriting, rather than typing, any notes (tip 42).

21 | Use the right screen for each purpose

If using multiple screens, you do need to give some thought as to which screen will be used for what purpose.

In coming to this decision, you will need to factor in your set-up and the type of screens you have. If you are using three computer monitors sitting side-by-side, this may be little more than personal preference.

If, on the other hand, you are using your television as one of the screens, a smaller laptop screen or a tablet, consideration will need to be given as to which screen is used for what purpose.

When making submissions or asking questions, you will want to be looking at the judge or the relevant participant to gauge, read and understand their body language and reactions.

One of the biggest challenges will be reading the body language of others and reacting accordingly. Ensuring that the screen the hearing is on is the best positioned will be important to making sure you do not miss a beat!

22 | Organise multiple electronic documents

Take the time to do this prior to the hearing starting each day when following tip 12. It is important that you do so.

For my trial, we had been expecting to proceed with an in-person hearing before the Government imposed its lockdown. The bundles were not always intended for electronic use and so, electronic bundles were generated in the run up to the trial.

For the first morning of trial, I had an enormous number of separate files open on my computer; 34 PDFs, 2 Word documents and 6 Excel spreadsheets.

Managing and navigating these was going to be challenging, and I found the key was organising the electronic bundles properly to ensure there was a clear system that I could follow when documents were being referred to.

Given the number of electronic bundles we had, having opened them all, I put all the PDFs into an order that I found was sequential. From the bundle I was in, this helped me to know in which direction I needed to move along the tab when looking for the next document. I found this to be imperative.

Having opened all of the files prior to the hearing starting (tip 12), I tested my set up to ensure that I had access to everything I needed and that I knew how I would locate a document quickly, and that it worked seamlessly (tip 1).
