• Most chronic illnesses have one or more organizations assisting those suffering from that illness and contain information on legal planning. For example, the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research hosts webinars and posts articles to help those suffering from Parkinson’s with their estate planning (www.michaeljfox.org).

• Planning for People with a Chronic Condition or Disability, by Martin Shenkman (Demos Health, 2009), provides a practical and comprehensive guide to estate and financial planning for those with a chronic disease or disability.

• If you would like to benefit someone with a disability or chronic illness in your estate plan, look for information specific to the state where the beneficiary lives because the rules regarding public benefits vary from state to state. For example, the Disability Rights Network of Pennsylvania has published a guide to estate planning for families of persons with disabilities (available at www.drnpa.org/File/publications/estate-planning-for-families-of-persons-with-disabilities.pdf).
