The ‘flow’ was moving more swiftly than Finn had realised. And the direction of the current was changing unexpectedly as well. Maybe it had had something to do with delivering those kittens that morning. Or possibly, it was due to the fast-paced atmosphere of the meeting he had with the television station executives later that day where ideas were being thrown around about how they could use Finn’s popularity to take the show in new directions. Perhaps Dr Finn could go travelling to do stories on unusual animals in different countries? Or, as Jude suggested, he could get involved in rescues that could be with domestic or wild animals. Someone else said that they were fielding requests for him to make guest appearances on both cooking and quiz shows. Finn was wondering, for the first time, if branching out from being the star of a reality veterinary show was really the direction he wanted his career to go in.

Another unexpected swirl in the current of that flow appeared when he got Hazel to drive him to his apartment building when she was ready to head home, with Ben back in his crate and a glowing report card on his healing fracture and Mittens with her kittens in the carrier beside him. He would take his own car to the meeting with Social Services and then follow her out of the city.

‘Stop here,’ he directed, a little way from his building. He shook his head only a short time after Hazel had parked discreetly. ‘See that guy? The one in the leather jacket, leaning on his car?’

‘Yes...oh...that’s a camera bag on his roof, isn’t it?’

‘Yeah...and even if I sneak in through the back and get into the basement garage, I’ll still have to drive out onto the street right there, by the front entrance and my car’s a bit too easy to recognise. He’d be on my tail instantly and the last thing we want is someone following us out of town.’

‘Mmm...’

‘Keep going,’ Finn told her. ‘There’s a car dealership a block or two away.’

‘You’re going to rent something?’

‘I might buy something.’ As the words emerged, they felt like the right thing to be saying. ‘A Porsche isn’t exactly the kind of car you want to be strapping a baby seat into, is it? I’m thinking it might be time to look at, oh, I don’t know...an SUV, maybe?’

It wasn’t that Finn was really expecting to be adopting his grandchild and bringing her up but he fully intended to be a significant part of her life and he could keep two cars, couldn’t he? An SUV for times with Beanie and the Porsche for his own playtime. He glanced at his watch.

‘We’ve got thirty minutes. If I pick one, they might even be able to have it ready for me by the time the meeting’s finished.’ He grinned at Hazel. ‘Come with me?’

‘What, to pick the colour of your car or be the taxi to your meeting?’

‘Well, I’d certainly welcome your opinion on colour but.
