When he did awake, it was to a hard slap on the face that sent him toppling over the side of the chair to the floor. Light poured in from the window. He looked up, rubbing his cheek. The innkeeper loomed over him, shirtless and with a ball of gray rags bunched in one fist that he shook in front of Garret’s face.

“You pissed in my chair!”

“Wha—” Garret looked down at his crotch and saw a wet stain. He peeked over the arm of the chair and saw another. “Sorry.”

“You’re scrubbing it or buying it. Your choice.” The innkeeper pushed the rags closer to Garret’s face.

“All right, all right, I’ll scrub it.” His head pounded.

The innkeeper dropped the rags into Garret’s lap. “And when you’re finished get out of here. Check out time is now.”

“Hold on there,” Garret said, fishing into his pocket until his fingers found the coin pouch. “I’m buying another night.”

The innkeeper looked down at Garret skeptically. Garret pulled out two coins from the pouch and held them up.

The innkeeper swiped the coins from Garret’s hands. “No more pissing on things.”

When Garret had cleaned the chair he walked hunched over to his room, flopped down on the bed, and fell back to sleep.
