Gem rocks up fifteen minutes later with an overnight bag and I'm surprised at how happy I am to see her. I've felt little apart from numbness since Mom died so it's a relief to know I can still function normally, still feel positive emotions.

“Girl's weekend," Gem grins, holding up a selection of chick flicks and copious amounts of chocolate. Her blonde curls bounce as she heads straight upstairs to put her things in the spare room. Gem is good company over the weekend.

She's the ray of sunshine I need right now. She deliberately keeps the conversation light, which I'm grateful for. We're just two teenage girls enjoying a sleepover and it's good to have some semblance of normality.

Mom was the one constant in my life but now I have to adjust to a reality that doesn't include her. She did her best to prepare me for this eventuality, never dreaming that it might actually happen. She drove me to be the best version of myself. I always indulged her, thinking it was a paranoia triggered by the loss of my father, but now I know better.

I sleep restlessly on Saturday night, waking early and padding downstairs in my pajamas to make coffee. I don’t know how long I sit in the living room, my mind churning over recent events while I sip my coffee.

By the time Gem wakes up and staggers downstairs, groggy-eyed, I've washed the dishes from the previous night and set a load of washing going in the machine.

I'm sure Gem can tell I'm distracted throughout the day, but she doesn't pressure me to talk. It's one of the things I like about her, the fact that she just accepts me as I am, no matter how crappy my mood.

Lisa calls in the afternoon to invite me round for dinner with the family but I can't face the company. Gem tries to change my mind but I won't be budged, finally convincing her that I'll be fine on my own.

With Gem gone, I have time to think. A plan is forming in my mind, but I need Cole's help.
