The first thing Hayden saw when she walked into Carter’s Magic Emporium was the dummy dangling upside-down from the ceiling. It was wrapped in chains, like a magician frozen in mid-escape. The store was decorated with bright red curtains and walls. Rows of long shelves held various masks featuring celebrities, politicians, and cartoon characters. A glass display case housed various small magic tricks.

A lanky man in a black tux waved grandly as the Snoops entered. He wore a tall hat, a pair of black-rimmed glasses, and had a thick mustache that curled at the ends. “Greetings and salutations!” he said. “Welcome to Carter’s Magic Emporium! I am Mr. Carter, magician supreme, here to answer your every question about the mystical arts of magic!” He paused. “Well, except how the tricks are done. I can’t tell you that.”

Jaden immediately rushed over to a giant cabinet stabbed through with several large, dramatic-looking swords. “Whoa,” he marveled, trying to pull one of the swords out like King Arthur drawing Excalibur from the stone.

“Better start saving your allowance now, if you want to buy that,” Carlos said with a smile.

Hayden approached Mr. Carter. “We’re looking for someone who may have shopped here,” she said, taking out the plastic bag with the mask in it. “This was purchased at your store.”

“Ooooh,” Mr. Carter said. “Magic enthusiasts and pint-sized detectives. Wonderful!” He took the bag from Hayden and examined the mask. At the sight of it, he fidgeted, turning it over in his hands. “Oh, y-yes,” he stammered, “I know this well. It’s a —”

A loud crash interrupted him. Hayden spun to see her brother laying on the floor. Jaden was somehow wearing a straitjacket and wrapped in chains, his arms tied behind his back. “Sorry,” he said, wiggling around and trying to free himself. “This escape trick is harder than I thought.”

“Oh my,” Mr. Carter said.
