Evelyn

Opening my eyes, my mind swims through fog as it tries to piece together what’s happened and where I am.

The room is dark, save for a few flickering candles. Okay, think Anna, think.

Anna?

I close my eyes and scrunch my face up in thought.

Evelyn, my name’s Evelyn. Where did that name come from?

Opening my eyes again, I slowly sit up to prop myself up on my elbows, but freeze as I notice a slight tug in my arm. Glancing down, my eyes trace a tube of red liquid down to a needle in my arm.

My stomach twists as I’m forced to look away. I hate needles.

“You’re awake,” comes a familiar voice, as a gentle hand lands on my own, “how are you feeling?”

It takes me a second to remember what brought me to this room in the first place.

“Fine,” I say after another second.

It’s mostly true. Although far from feeling normal, at least I no longer feel like I’m on the brink of death. Even the pain from earlier has subsided into nothing more than a dull throb.

“Good, just another moment and …”

Luci pauses, his grip tightening and I look back to find him staring off into nothing.

“And?” I press, but he remains unresponsive for another second before snapping back into focus.

“Damn it,” he growls, reaching for the needle in my arm.

I squeeze my eyes shut tight just in time.

“Relax,” Luci orders, and despite my desire to do the opposite, I obey.

Although I feel the needle leave, at least I don’t see it. I let out a little sigh of relief as Luci works quickly to apply cotton and a little pressure. He helps me sit up as I clutch at the towel in an effort to keep myself modest. “Hold this.”

“Thank you, Lucien” I murmur, as I move to press two fingers to the cotton and Luci works to clean up the tubing and other medical equipment.

“What … what did you just say?”

I blink up at him as he turns to look at me, his expression strained.

“Thank you?”

His brow furrows, but then he shakes it off as he moves to finish cleaning and packing the leather bag on the table. I draw my knees up to my chest, still applying pressure to my arm when I notice the blood staining the towel beneath me.

“It’s old blood,” he says, as if reading my mind. “You stopped hemorrhaging soon after we started the transfusion, but it was almost too late.”

I shudder at the thought.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?” he asks, once again taken aback.

“It’s never been that bad before. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”

“You shouldn’t apologize for that. If anything, I—" He suddenly blanks again, but this time only for a few seconds before his focus snaps to me. “We have to go.”

“Go? Where?”

I suddenly feel like bursting into tears for no reason, and have to fight them back even harder when I shift to drop my legs over the side of the table and feel a wave of nausea overtake me.

Luci doesn’t respond, instead scooping me up off the table and sprinting to the door.
