SACRIFICES

Lucas watched as Konstantin strode out of the dance club. People practically threw themselves out of the vampire’s way. Their faces showed fear, awe, concern, many things, but none dared stand before him. Lucas crossed his arms over his chest and hugged himself tightly as confusion and concern filled him. What had happened? Had the dance club been too much for Konstantin’s aggrieved senses? Lucas prayed that it hadn’t been something he had done. Konstantin hadn’t seemed upset with him, but, dare he say it, almost desperate to be near him yet just as desperate to get away. Angelis’ right hand lightly fell on his shoulder.

“Come, Lucas, let’s get you a drink,” Angelis suggested kindly.

Lucas shook his head. He was in no mood for company, even as fun a company like Angelis’ would have been under other circumstances. “No, no, I think I’m going to go upstairs--”

“Lucas,” Angelis’ tone was still kind, but firm. “Konstantin was clear that he wanted you to stay here, not go upstairs, not work. You don’t want to disappoint him, do you?”

Lucas drew in a deep breath. Konstantin had used the power of his promise as well to keep him from arguing. He had agreed to do whatever Konstantin wanted. Maybe he should have been more careful with his words. Konstantin was in pain… or something. And all Lucas wanted to do was fix it. But Konstantin wanted him to remain down here, dancing and drinking the night away. How could Konstantin expect him to do that when the vampire was in distress?

Lucas let out that breath and said, “I don’t see why it matters if I’m down here or on the first floor or in my room--”

“Distance,” Angelis interrupted softly. When Lucas opened his mouth to ask what he meant, Angelis tugged on Lucas’ arm. “Come. You need a drink. So do I.”

Lucas reluctantly allowed Angelis to take him to one of the niches that studded the walls around the main dancefloor. The niches had curved ceilings and heavy red velvet curtains that dulled the music and the flash of the lights. The illumination inside was from a frosted sconce that flickered like candlelight. A huge biker was sprawled on one of the low slung dark purple couches. His eyes lit up with ill-concealed desire at the two of them. Angelis made a hissing sound of displeasure rather like a cat. The man just smiled more broadly.

“Lucas is not for you, fool,” Angelis told him.

The big man spread his massive arms wide. “Why not? You like a third, a fourth, Hell, the whole dance floor wouldn’t be enough for your hunger oftentimes, Angelis. And he is pretty as a picture.”

A smile appeared on Angelis’ pink lips as if pleased by the description of the size of his desires. “True. Marcus, but Lucas is not on the menu.” He kicked Marcus’ booted feet. “Go get us drinks then make yourself scarce.”

A frown appeared on Marcus’ handsome, if craggy face. “You promised me a whole night together.
