Chapter 13

"Well, you look like complete shit."

I looked up to see Drax standing in the doorway of my small sleeping quarters.

We'd only been the air for fifteen minutes and my stomach had already tied itself in an intricate series of knots that I didn't think I could get undone. The fact that I may have been afraid of flying didn’t cross my mind until I felt the lurching in my midsection as we ascended into the air. Then came the waves of anxiety that had forced me to the small bedroom. Even in a smaller space, it still bubbled up inside me.

"Thanks. That's what every girl loves to hear." I half chuckled, my mind still centered on the encroaching possibility that we could drop out of the sky at any moment.

We didn't have many other choices, though. If we had stayed in place, the NHRA would have found us, that was only if Orion and his crew of misfits didn't get to us first. And I didn't even want to think about how it would have ended if the governors had deciphered our location. We would have been done for.

Drax looked at me, his eyes still laced with huger. There was so much difference about him since he'd switched his conscience off. All the way down to the way he stood in the doorway, leaned up against the frame with his arms crossed tightly around his body. He was more sure of himself, unapologetic, maybe even a little bit less broken, and it looked good on him. His muscles bulged gently beneath the plain red t-shirt he wore, and I couldn't help but brush over them with my eyes.

Something inside of me was drawn to this version of him, and I wondered which version was the real one.

Was there even such a thing?

People changed so much throughout their lifetimes. Trauma and pain do that to you. Was it fair of me to look at him now, standing devilishly handsome in front of me and wish for the old version back?

I didn't think the old version existed anymore, and the look in his eyes told me that he didn't think so either.

Drax took a step into the room and I eyed him cautiously. He threw his hands in the air to form a truce.

"I'm not going to kill you I swear." He smirked. "Now maybe maim you, dismemberment is a possibility. But kill you? I could never."

I rolled my eyes. "Didn't you just try to kill me a few hours ago?"

"Bygones, darling. Bygones." He made his way to the nightstand beside the bed and pulled out a bottle of bourbon and a glass.

He offered an empty glass to me but I shook my head. My stomach screamed at the thought of even water. I didn't dare thinking about alcohol.

"But it's your twenty-first birthday. Aren't you going to celebrate?" He poured his glass suspiciously slowly.

"I'll dance over the governors' bodies. Does that count as a celebration?"

Drax shrugged before downing his entire glass of bourbon and slamming the glass on the nightstand to pour more.
