SECOND

1.

Luminous, near at hand, known as moving in the cave

of the heart, that is the great goal. All that stirs,

breathes and blinks is found within it. Know that as

what is and what is not,13 beyond the understanding of creatures, most charming, highest of all.

2.

That which is radiant, subtler than the subtle, in which rest

the worlds and those in the worlds—that is the imperishable

Brahman. That is life. That is speech and mind. That is

the true. That is the immortal. That is to be pierced. Pierce it, my gentle friend!

3.

Taking as your bow the mighty weapon, the Upanishad,

fix on it the arrow made sharp by meditation.

Drawing it back, your mind going to the essence of that,

hit the target—that imperishable—my friend.

4.

The sacred syllable is the bow, the Self is the arrow,

Brahman is declared the target.

Undistracted, one should pierce it,

and like the arrow, become united with it.

5.

He on whom are woven sky, earth and the space between,

also mind, along with all the vital organs—

know him alone as the one Self.

Banish other talk. This is the bridge to immortality.

6.

Where the arteries are joined together like spokes on the hub

of a chariot wheel, there he stirs within [himself], becoming

manifold. That is Om. Recollect the Self thus. May it be well

with you as you move beyond darkness to the further shore.

7.

He who is all-knowing, all-wise,

whose is the glory here on earth—

he is this Self, seated in the space [within the heart],14

the shining city of Brahman.

8.

Filling the mind, the guide of life-breath and body,

the Self is established in food [the body], having settled

in the heart. By means of this knowledge the wise realize

the immortal Self, shining, full of bliss.

9.

The knot of the heart is severed,

all doubts are dispelled,

and one’s accumulated deeds () are destroyed

when he is seen as beyond the world and in it.

10.

Within the veil made of gold15 is Brahman,

stainless, without parts.

That is the pure, the light of lights,

that is what knowers of the Self know.

11.

There the sun shines not, nor the moon nor stars,

nor do these lightnings shine, much less this fire.

Only when he shines does everything shine.

This whole world shines by his light.16

12.

Brahman, truly, is this immortal.

Brahman is in front, Brahman is behind,

it is to the right and to the left, it extends below and above.

This whole world is nothing but Brahman, the supreme.
