Lungwort (Pulmonaria officinalis): The leaves of this white-flecked, bristly plant in the borage family are said to resemble spots on sick lungs. Why should the lungwort—as it was named by Hildegard of Bingen—help in diseases of the respiratory system? In part, because of its high content of silica and some mucilaginous ingredients.

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria): Meadowsweet prefers moist, cold locations. Like the washerwomen, the herb constantly has its “hands” in cold water but gets no rheumatism. That is why they brewed a tea from the white-flowering meadowsweet (Herba et Flores Spirea ulmariae) to counter rheumatism and joint pain. Today, we know that this indication is true. Both willow and meadowsweet contain salicylaldehyde, which is synthesized in the body to acetylsalicylic acid—a natural, pain-relieving aspirin. Other common names include lady of the meadow, bridewort, and queen of the meadow.

Milk thistle (Silybum marianum): Also called holy thistle or Marian thistle, the milk thistle, as well as other spiky thistles, was considered a remedy for “side-stitches.” If “stitches” (on the right side) meant disorders of the liver, then that would be true. The seeds of the milk thistle (Fructus Cardui Mariae) are indeed one of the best liver remedies.

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris): The stems of the mugwort plant turn red when they grow in the full sun, a sure sign that mugwort can stimulate menstruation.

Saint-John’s-wort (Hypericum perforatum): When the flower bud is squeezed, a spot of red “blood” comes out, and the leaf looks as if it has been poked with needles when held up to the light. Paracelsus determined the signature indicated it was a medicinal herb for stab wounds. The herb may, in addition to many other uses, be effectively used in wound healing.
