Thor’s Journey to Utgard

One day Thor decided to go adventuring in the land of the giants, and Loki asked to go along with him. So they got into Thor’s goat-drawn chariot and drove out of Asgard. At the end of the first day, near the border of the giant’s world, Jotunheim, they stopped at a farmhouse to spend the night.

Thor wanted to thank the farmer and his wife for their hospitality by cooking a goat stew for them. He slaughtered and skinned his goats and put them in the pot. Seeing his hosts’ shocked looks, Thor said, “Don’t worry about the goats. Just make sure you put all the bones, whole, into the skins I’ve laid out.” The family did as he commanded, except for the farmer’s son, Thjalfi, who cracked open one of the thigh bones to get at the marrow.

The next morning, Thor took the goatskins full of bones out into the courtyard and blessed them with his hammer, Mjolnir. Instantly, the goats popped back up, full of life once more. The only problem was that one of them was lame in one leg.

“Someone broke a bone, didn’t they?” said Thor through gritted teeth. His brows furrowed, he gripped Mjolnir with white knuckles, and storm clouds gathered. Seeing his anger reaching a boiling point, the family became frightened.

“Please, my lord,” pleaded the farmer, “take my son, Thjalfi, and my daughter, Roskva, as servants to compensate you for this offense.” Thor calmed down and accepted their offer. Thjalfi and Roskva packed their things, and Thor left the goats at the farm to recover.

The foursome departed and soon entered a dark forest. Toward evening they found a place to pass the night, a large building that was completely open on one side. But when they tried to sleep, thunderous roaring and a quaking of the ground kept them awake. They moved farther back in the building, taking refuge in a side chamber, but they still didn’t get much sleep.

In the morning, a groggy Thor discovered that there was a giant sleeping—and snoring—not far away, and he realized what had caused all the noise during the night. This wasn’t just a giant, it was a GIANT, one who would have towered above the trees if he’d been standing up. At Thor’s approach, the giant did just that. For the first time in his life, Thor was unsure if he wanted to start a fight with a giant.

“Ah, good morning, little man,” said the giant, yawning. “Hey, I recognize you! You must be Thor of the Aesir, aren’t you? My name’s Skrymir, by the way. Say, you weren’t trying to steal my glove, were you?”

Thor watched as Skrymir picked up the building they’d been sleeping in, and he saw that it was indeed a gigantic glove. The side chamber was just the thumb of the glove! Skrymir settled down for breakfast, and so did Thor and his companions. The giant asked where they were going.

“To Utgard, to test our abilities against the giants there,” said Thor.
