8.1 Stackpole Quay

Stackpole Quay is on the southwest coast of Wales, along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, and within Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The rocks here are folded and faulted Lower Carboniferous (Mississippian) limestones of the Pembroke Limestone Group. The limestone was deposited in a shallow marine setting between 359 and 329 Ma (BGS, Geology of Britain Viewer Classic). This area is within but close to the northern limit of Variscan deformation (Cawood et al., 2017). Fold axes trend west-northwest. The axis of the Stackpole Anticline is located at the slipway; a small islet a short distance to the north contains the axis of the Stackpole Quay Syncline. The Stackpole Fault, an east–west tear fault (a strike-slip fault that cuts a thrust sheet) with about 100 m (328 ft) of right-lateral offset, can be seen in the old quarry face (Earthwatcher, Stackpole Quay).

Stackpole Quay was designated a SSSI in 1977 in order to protect its biological and geological features. The folds and faults exposed here are typical of and provide key insights into the overall structure of the Variscan deformed belt in Pembrokeshire (Wikipedia, Trewent Point).
