Chapter 37

After Reece left, I couldn’t sit still. I texted John a couple of times during the night, but he never got back to me. After that, I called, but it was the same result—no reply. I wish he had just told me what he had on Robert because I couldn’t sleep thinking about it. If it were something about Wally, then John surely would have met me last night. He is the only person in the world who knows about my suspicions regarding my husband’s death.

The traffic is painfully slow this morning, and it feels like everyone is out to annoy me. It’s always the same when you’re rushing, but it never brings any comfort to know that it’s just your impatience making everything seem worse.

I called John again this morning, and he didn’t answer. He told me before he ended our call last night to be at his office by 8:30. Even with the traffic, I’ll be there early. I just hope he is too. Something in his voice last night was different. I’ve seen him get excited in the way that only a lawyer can before, and this wasn’t it. Usually, having a piece of evidence that could bring someone like Robert down would have John electrified with excitement.

Lilith has never known it, but in the years following Fletcher’s passing, myself and John Howerton became quite close. On a couple of occasions, it nearly passed over from a client-lawyer relationship to something more. Both times, one of us stopped it before it could. John is a bit too metrosexual for my tastes, but he is a man who takes charge of situations, and I like that aspect of his persona.

Of course, I’m twelve years older than him, so that might have become an issue at some stage.

Our friendship—if you could call it that—started one day years ago when I asked him some questions regarding private detectives. He asked why I wanted one, and I ended up telling him a little about my suspicions regarding Robert DuBose and Wally’s death. As it turned out, John had represented a man a few years before. This guy had been an employee at DuBose Construction who had seen some things he didn’t quite like. John had filled me in on the details on a need-to-know basis, but what little he told me confirmed a lot of my earlier suspicions.

Soon after taking on the case, John began receiving threatening phone calls. His ex-wife—wife at the time—also claimed that she was being followed. John refused to be intimidated, but a few weeks later, his client showed up in a cast and told him that he no longer wanted to pursue the case.

John never forgot the harassment he and his wife were subjected to and has held a vendetta against Robert DuBose ever since.

A gap opens up in the line of traffic, and I edge the Ford forward. I hang a left and swing onto Essex Street. A glint of sunshine reflects off the fender of the car in front, and I squint.
