16: Nurture List

Nurturing and self-care involves people, places, and things that nurture our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual needs.

This is often something that comes secondary to other activities and priorities in our lives. Generally women are taught that self-care comes after caring for other people, while men are taught that they don’t need self-care for they are to be strong at all times.

Self-care and nurturing, however, are crucial to our happiness. Women cannot truly care for others until they can show themselves care; and, when men deny their need for self-care, they are denying something very basic and necessary.

If we aren’t used to making time for self-care, we need to make a conscious effort to do so. This requires listing self-care activities we can use to nourish ourselves and even scheduling time for these activities into our calendars.

In my experience, there are two types of activities that fall under the self-care category: those that we know are good for us but don’t enjoy (such as going to the dentist), and those that we know are good for us and feel like bliss (such as lying in bed and reading a book all morning).

To differentiate between these activities, I will call the first group self-care activities, and the second self-nurturing activities. So that you can capture the activities good for you which you enjoy, as well as those less pleasurable in the short-term, divide these into two lists. For every item on list one, self-care activities, add an item to the self-nurturing list two to balance out the good and not-so-pleasurable with the good and pleasurable.

Here are some items that might fall under the self-care list:

Going to the dentist

Going running

Getting vaccinations

Studying a voluntary subject to further personal development (e.g., learning a language as an adult)

Eyebrow plucking/leg shaving/other personal maintenance

Getting a medical exam

And here are some that might fall under the self-nurturing list:

Sleeping in

Getting a haircut

Buying a new item of clothing to replace a worn-out or ill-fitting one

Doing gentle yoga stretches

Having a warm bath

Doing something creative or artistic, such as painting, drawing, or making jewelery

Making time to read a good book
