Victore

Pain coursed through my body, my head pounded where he’d hit me. I felt the ropes that tied my hands to a chair as well as the gag that had been placed across my mouth. I couldn’t move. I was living my nightmare. Panic filled me to the bone. The sound of voices arguing finally drifted into my mind and pierced my consciousness.

I recognized that voice: Victore. I opened my eyes just a fraction of a slit to see where I was. Across the room, Victore argued with two Druzazzi. The one I had seen talking to Bart at his hideout that he had called Queet. The second one just looked like a squatter and smaller version of him.

Victore seemed highly irritated, “How can you believe a highwayman?” he snapped at them.

Queet eyed him suspiciously in return, “He knew we join forces. Knew you betray King Michael. Maybe knows we land tomorrow on Fandollini Spit on the tide!”

“You cannot believe those lies!” Victore shouted. “I have not betrayed you. I have no idea how this highwayman has figured this out!”

Queet moved in, attempting to intimidate, “Black Bart seems to know you. Said you pay him.”

“And he is a LIAR! I do not know this ridiculous highwayman.”

“How can he know of plan?” Queet questioned him in a quieter, more menacing voice.

“Have you ever thought that perhaps he was bluffing? That he was fishing for information? That he had no idea you were involved, that is, until they captured you in the forest for God’s sake!” Victore roared with just a hint of hysteria in his voice. He knew he was on the knife’s edge and this man could kill him before his guards could stop him. He looked accusingly back at Queet.

Queet was dangerously calm, “Killed spy sent to follow me. I not stupid.”

Poor Puntalo, I thought to myself. He seemed a rather decent sort. Just then, I noticed a small movement under the flap of the tent to the left. Mouse crept in. She looked up, our eyes met and she gave me a little nod and disappeared back under the tent.

“The only one who does know when you are landing is this ugly beast of a woman.” Victore’s voice snarled with disgust as he rushed over to my chair. I closed my eyes and let my head fall forward. He grabbed my hair and snapped my head back, “Oh, stop faking it, Olive. You think I didn’t notice those beady eyes peering about?”

I tried to speak, but the gag prevented that, so I lowered my head and wouldn’t look at him.

Victore put his face close to mine, he sounded so smug and pleased with himself. “Oh, want to say something? Like your little charm for turning into some creature?” He let out a mean snicker, then pulled my hair harder forcing me to look at him, “Roseline told me how your magical powers work. That’s why I’ve tied your arms down and gagged you,” he hissed.

He stood back up and smiled, “Gather round, gentlemen, for she is the last of them.
