Wednesday night arrives, and I am once again at Kairi’s. She’s always on the computer when I arrive at the end of the day. I’ve closed the clinic every day this week, so I don’t get to the house until close to nine. She’s dedicated to her job. I’ll give her that.

Tonight, she’s on her computer, and I’m on my phone. The monitor on the wall shows alternating security camera views. Their security system is unusual. I have friends with a video monitor near the gate entrance. It allows them to see who is at the gate before they open it. But the camera angles along the property line and up the gravel road are unprecedented. I’ve never known anyone in one of the elite military groups, so I am guessing this is a case of boys gone wild with their toys. But every now and then I think back to my first night here and being asked to pop my trunk. She has her laptop angled so I can’t see the screen. My phone vibrates.
