Chapter 14

The Bloodcurdling Ride

Tigo’s face was as white as a sheet, his hands were clenched, and he hadn’t uttered a word since they had departed on their journey to Oman. He refused to look down where the ocean was visible just a mere fifty feet below the carpet. He knew if he spotted a shark fin he would faint from fear. The four friends sat crossed legged, facing each other, in the middle of the carpet with their knees touching. Emma couldn’t help but notice that Logan had managed to sit closely beside her and kept their knees touching most of the ride which caused a flutter of butterflies in her stomach.

The carpet flew swiftly through the air, like a wild cat tearing across the Serengeti. At times the ride was jarring, Emma felt a bit carpet sick: her stomach was queasy, and her lips turned the green colour of an un-ripe pear. Logan sat quietly watching Emma.

“You about to chunder?” Logan asked Emma.

“Chunder?” Emma asked.

She was confused by Logan’s strange Aussie expression.

“Yeah, you about to barf?” he explained.

“This is no worries, mate.”

Logan was now in full-on Aussie mode because he was so nervous. At first none of the kids suspected that Logan was as scared as Tigo. Logan wasn’t worried about the sharks, but he was terrified about being high up in the air.

Only Zahara was enjoying the trip. She was having the time of her life and she felt like the heroine in her beloved stories. She adored the carefree feeling of the wind blowing her long black hair and the occasional kiss from a daring wave.

The four friends had departed from the Zanzibar Castle at sun set. There was no time to lose and they felt the darkness would keep them hidden from view. After laying out the carpet on the floor of Zahara’s room they had each gingerly taken a seat and primed themselves for the journey. When Zahara gave Tigo the nod, he slowly started singing the same song that had raised the carpet the first time.

“I believe I can fly.”

Tigo’s voice was trembling as he continued, “I believe I can touch the sky.”

Within seconds the carpet had come off the stone floor and lifted towards the ceiling.

“How will we get the carpet out the window?” Tigo asked.

“I don’t want a repeat of my earlier experience. I still have a huge bump on my head.”

“Let me try,” Zahara suggested. “Hey, go out the window.” She directed. “Out the window!”

She tried again the way she would order one of her servant girls in the Castle.

Emma took over with a whistle like the one she used to call Biscuit.

“Here, boy, out the window.”

The carpet took a sharp swerve left and sped out the window. They were off.

“Good on ya!”

That was Logan’s Aussie way of complimenting Emma.

“Please take us to Oman, carpet,” she requested gently.

Emma felt weird calling the carpet, carpet. She thought he needed a name.

“How about we call you Sky? That seems like a good name for a magical flying carpet.
