“Nice job, Penny,” I congratulated her. “You’re even more of a badass kitty cat now.”

Dahlia threw her arms around her and squeezed her suddenly. Penny froze for a moment, nearly recoiling, then relaxed with a single purr.

“You did a good job too, girl,” Wallace said, helping Langley up from the ground. Her tail was tucked between her legs, and she looked incredibly grumpy. After the rats, she probably felt invincible, but those actual players had been too high of a level for her to even contend with. It wasn’t for lack of trying on her part.

“Yeah, you did,” I agreed. “In fact, you get to pick as many footballs, baseballs, and basketballs as you want.”

“For chewies?” she said, brightening suddenly. “And… fetch!?”

“Yup,” I agreed. “You deserve it.”

“Think we’re good to go?” Wallace said after a few more minutes of looting. He’d allowed Langley to take every ball in the store’s display. We’d moved at triple the speed, eager to get out of Beatty’s before anything else happened.

“Yeah, let me do one final lap,” I said. “Dahlia, make sure you grab all the freeze-dried food, energy gummies, and sports drink mixes, okay? Wallace, you grab all the compression sleeves, shin splint gear, ankle wraps… all the med crap.”

After my final instructions, I walked along the left of the store, past the kayaks and baseball gear once more, as well as other sport equipment. I made sure to grab as many bars and golf clubs they had in stock. They made damn good melee weapons in a pinch. To add to that, I took a few of the store’s meager selection of dumbbells and kettlebells. It wasn’t like I wanted to work out on the go, but I bet I could find a use for them.

As I took the final three small steps down towards the entrance and register area, I noticed something that caught my eye. I could have kicked myself for not seeing it before, but well… shit had happened.

Behind the register was an autographed Cal Ripken ball and bat. It held a place of honor in the store, clearly the owner’s prized possession, and as I stared at it, a funny sort of thrum ran down my spine. I mean sure, it wasn’t Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron memorabilia, but the fact that the owners displayed it here and not in their home spoke a lot about its importance to them. My spine thrummed again as the word importance skittered across my brain.

“Oh, shit,” I said softly, hopping over the counter.

Using the butt of my camp ax, I broke open the display case and freed both the ball and the bat from their velvet nesting place. As soon as I did, words flashed in front of my eyes.

Congratulations! You have found a legendary item!

I hastily put both items in my inventory, then pulled up my menu to view their properties.
