[Chapter Eleven]

The detective managed to keep his cool until he left the museum. Maxim and the others followed him out to his car. Detective Andrews put the portrait in the trunk. Then he found a note on his windshield:

I hope you enjoy your new piece of art: a portrait of the world’s dumbest detective.

“Arrgh!” The detective threw the note on the ground and stomped on it with his feet. “That blasted rat! The nerve of that guy! Wait until I get my hands on him!” He began jumping up and down.

“Uncle Newton, I think you’d better stop that,” said Cody. “People are looking at you. The thief may be one of them. You never know.”

The detective stood still and looked around. People in the parking lot were gawking at him. He straightened up and patted his hair. Then he picked up the note and put it in his pocket.

“I’ll see you later,” he said in a dignified manner. He got into his car and slammed the door.

The detective rolled down the window. “The most frustrating thing about this case isn’t the fact that the director doesn’t think it’s important, or even the jokes. It’s the methods. Most thieves get lazy and use the same method over and over. Not this guy. He puts tape over a lock, throws smoke bombs, tries breaking and entering. What’s next? I have no idea!” He rolled up the window and drove away.
