Does Islam allow polygamy, concubines, and temporary marriages?

Ye are never able to do justice between wives even if it is your ardent desire: but turn not away (from a woman) altogether, so as to leave her (as it were) hanging (in the air).

—SURA 4:129

Islamic women face the fact that their monogamous relationship with their husbands can come to an end abruptly through any one of three options granted to their husbands. First, the Qur’an permits Muslim men to marry up to four women (sura 4:3) as long as each is treated equally monetarily and relationally. Second, the Qur’an allows Muslim conquerors to take concubines from among captives as long as they are not already married (sura 4:24). Finally, Shia Muslims, who number approximately 150 million today, allow temporary marriages (mut’a), marriages intended for a limited time only, which are intended to fulfill a man’s sexual needs while traveling.

One tradition related that a temporary union “should last three nights, and if they like to continue, they can do so, and if they want to separate, they can do so.”9 Muhammad certainly allowed for these unions during wartime (Bukhari 6.139), but the vast majority of scholars contend that he revoked his proviso soon thereafter.10
