Chapter Seventeen

Weston stuck around after Garrison left. Normally, I might grumble beneath my breath about him being here. But this time he was helping me straighten up, so I welcomed his company. “Many hands make light work” was one of my favorite sayings.

He paused by a bookshelf and picked up a picture of me and Phil at the Grammy Awards. Of all the photos I could have brought, I’d chosen that one.

I wasn’t even sure why. Maybe I just wanted to be reminded of my past. Of where I’d been and where I was now. That was the last big event I did before leaving that part of my life behind.

“I still can’t believe you walked away from this.” Weston set the picture back on the shelf.

“I still can’t believe I ever walked into it.”

He let out a chuckle. “Touché.”

I crossed my arms and leaned back against my couch. “It’s just the truth.”

Weston continued to study me. “Do you ever miss it?”

I didn’t even have to think about my answer. “Nope. Not at all.”

“Well, I guess it’s the rest of us who are missing out. Nothing I love more than hearing you sing.”

“I still sing. Just not onstage.”

Weston paused and looked at me for a moment. I tried to read the look in his eyes before deciding I didn’t want to know exactly what he was thinking.

If I searched deep inside myself enough, I’d probably admit I still needed to deal with the hard feelings I felt after things ended between the two of us. I didn’t want those feelings to be there. I didn’t want to be petty.

But I was skating around the bigger issues that stood between us.

Mostly, the heartbreak.

I’d been swept away by this man. Even Phil hadn’t consumed me and infatuated me like Weston had. What we’d had between us seemed like that once-in-a-lifetime thing.

Weston straightened, looking as if he were about to say something important. “Camryn—”

Before he could finish, his phone rang. He let out a sigh then pulled the device from his pocket and glanced at the screen. “I’ve got to take this.”

A surprising disappointment pressed on me. “Of course. Do what you need to do.”

He put it to his ear and paced into the kitchen. But I could still hear his half of the conversation.

He was talking to Athena—his ex-wife.

“I understand what you’re saying, but you can’t do that,” Weston murmured. “I’ve already planned to see them this weekend. I’ve already arranged everything.”

When I heard the anguish in his voice, I began straightening a bookshelf and tried not to listen.

That wasn’t entirely true. I was curious as to what he was talking about. Curious about what his relationship was like with his ex-wife.

His ex-wife who’d cheated on him with a tech mogul. The two of them were now married, and Weston had been publicly dumped and humiliated.

“I’m telling you, you can’t do that. It’s not fair.” He paused near the window and stared out. As he did, his shoulders tightened, and he shook his head.
