12. Worry and Trust

On the ride up the elevator, Devon broached the subject of Sam. “If Sam is going to be with us tomorrow, I don’t know how we can avoid telling him what we’re up to.”

“So … what? We just spill the beans about the TDC?” Jeremy asked as the elevator came to a stop on the fifth floor.

The doors opened, and they stepped out. “I think we’ll have to.” Devon said. “Plus, maybe he’ll be helpful.”

“Right,” Jeremy said testily.

Devon stopped in the middle of the hallway and faced Jeremy. “Why do you have to be so hard on him? I get that you feel threatened by Cheryl, but it’s not Sam’s fault.”

“I don’t feel—”

“Really?” accused Devon.

They stared at each other. Jeremy broke eye contact first, his gaze dropping to the floor.

“Ok,” Jeremy said, wanting to deflect the conversation. “But what about our parents? We definitely can’t do anything with them around. We can’t just ditch Cheryl, and what about your mom?”

They took the remaining steps to Jeremy’s hotel room.

“I’m guessing she’s got work to do.” Devon said.

“There you are!” Jeremy’s mom enveloped him in a hug before he could walk through the door. For some reason Devon’s parents were also in the suite. Devon’s mom grabbed her too.

“Mom … Mom … you’re squeezing me.” Jeremy’s mom let go of him. “What’s going on?” Tension permeated the room. Sam was sitting in their bedroom with his head in his hands. “What’s wrong with Sam?”

Tears were running down his mom’s face. “Cheryl’s been taken.”

Jeremy’s mind went blank. “Taken?... What do you mean, taken?”

“When she and Sam were out, a van drove up and tried to get both of them inside. Sam only just escaped.”

Jeremy stared into his mother’s eyes, dumbstruck. He was at a loss for words. Taken? As in kidnapped? But why? His body frozen, his mind seemed to turn back on and burned with a hundred questions. His attention wandered back to Sam, and he was unclear what to do. Should he go over to him? Before he made up his mind, Devon walked through the door and sat on the bed. Jeremy couldn’t hear her but assumed she was trying to provide reassurance.

“What’s being done?” Jeremy asked. “Who’s trying to find her?”

“We’ve already contacted the police,” his mom said. “We filled out a report, and they said they’d call as soon as they had any information.”

There was a knock on the door. Travis entered the room carrying a large brown bag. “I’m so sorry, Jess…. Where’s Sam?”

Jeremy’s mom pointed to the bedroom. Travis put the brown bag on the table and went into the room. Devon got up and came back to her mother’s side; they stood arm in arm. The room was silent and still. No one seemed to know what to say.

Travis got up off the bed and wandered back to the main room. “Can we go to your room, Bob?”

Devon’s dad nodded his head. “Sure.”

“Kids. I need you to stay here,” Travis said. “Take care of Sam.
