The forest fell away from Bess as she dangled helplessly in the eagle’s claw. The bird had snatched Maria up with its other claw, while the second eagle had scooped up Beau and Louie. Professor Ash was shouting something down below, but the birds had such huge wings that after only a couple of flaps they were soaring high above the train and towards the horizon. They were moving so fast that Bess’s eyes streamed.

“This isn’t good!” Maria shouted over to her. “This is definitely not where we want to be.”

Bess gripped on to the eagle’s tough talon until her knuckles turned white. She was terrified that the bird might suddenly drop her, yet at the same time she couldn’t help being just a little bit thrilled at the sight of the Land of Halloween Sweets spread out below. Being snatched away by a giant eagle sounded like the type of adventure Pops might have told her about. The kind of story that she could never be completely sure was actually true or not.

“Can’t you use your fire magic?” Bess called to Maria. She could see Cedric clinging on to the witch’s shoulders.

“Not while we’re flying,” Maria replied. “The eagle might drop us if I try anything. We’ve got no choice but to let it land first.”

Bess twisted her head to look back at the second eagle swooping along behind them, Beau and Louie gripped in its claws. The boys had obviously had the same thought as Maria because they weren’t making any attempt to escape either. When Bess stared back down at the landscape below, she saw that they’d already flown far away from the Forest of Chocolate Eyeballs. In fact, it wasn’t even in view any more.

It seemed like most of the land was made up of various graveyards with crooked, rundown churches, in among forests, fields and vegetable patches. There were some rocky-looking mountains up ahead and, in the distance, Bess saw the ruins of a pink castle. But there was no sign of any people. No shops or schools or houses…

At least there was one house, but it was really more of a mansion. A gigantic black marble building in the middle of a large gated garden, complete with its own fountains and even a maze. Bess marvelled at it as they flew over, wondering if this could be the home of the Candymaker the witch fairy had mentioned. There was a strange-looking orange forest just beyond the mansion’s gates, but before Bess could take a proper look the eagles swooped down towards the mountains.
