That evening, Calix laid out his sleeping bag, and wormed in. The room was basic: one small window, unfinished walls, and a ceiling of rough beams. Above them he could hear scratching. He lay on a dirty mattress on the floor, but it was comfier than the thin mat in the tent.

He imagined the injured men in the large house, on their dirty mattresses. The screams in the night. The smell. Their nightmares.

The men were like the ones in the newspaper articles on his attic wall. The reason he’d got involved. Part of it.

The kidnapping would change things – make a difference. Protest, as he’d tried to explain to Barney, was toothless. A middle-class way of expunging guilt. To get anything done, you had to get your hands dirty. What he hadn’t said, hadn’t realised, was you had to expect a reckoning.
