The exhausted, chilled Virginia fell asleep and did not hear the bells ring out from the St. Boniface cathedral, or hear the hurrahs of the crowd that had gathered on a pier when Mr. Edgar’s boat came into sight.

“A survivor,” Mr. Edgar explained as he carried the sleeping Virginia in his arms. “A poor wee child.”

A boy with coppery red hair stared at Virginia’s sleeping face, her mouth turned down with sadness, a tear drying on her cheek. “I’ll be her friend,” he said.

“All in good time, Réjean,” Mr. Edgar said. “But right now what Virginia Potts needs is a soft warm bed.”

“The poor thing,” people murmured when they saw Virginia fast asleep in Mr. Edgar’s arms, clutching the rowboat that her father had made against her chest.

“Horrible.”

“Terrible.”

“It’s a calamity,” people said as they stood on the pier, looking across the water to where the town of Wellington had once been.

“There went the best red wine and sherry in all the land.”

“And donuts.”

“And who will buy our boots?”

“A calamity, for sure.”
